Bubble Shmubble

For me, before the turn of the 21st century, a bubble was something I blew with soap as a kid. It was fun seeing how many bubbles I could blow at once…how big a bubble I could blow…and if I could catch the bubbles before they hit the ground.

As they say…that was then, this is now!

If I mention “bubble”, what pops into your head? Dot-com bubble? Real estate bubble? NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Bubble? The Bubble has become our metaphor (or was it simile?...I was better at math) of the 21st century to describe most everything. Is there a real estate bubble or isn’t there? Which teams are on the bubble? Whose bubble will burst?

What is it about a bubble that has made it such an attractive term these last few years? I have a few ideas:

  • All bubbles burst – We have become a culture (unfortunately, in my opinion) that enjoys seeing the bubble burst. Take any celebrity of notoriety as an example…Paris Hilton…Kiefer Sutherland…Nicole Ritchie…Mel Gibson…Lindsey Lohan…Michael Jackson.
  • Like Kramer seeing how long he can drive before he runs out of gas, we love to see how big we can get the bubble before it bursts.

Here are a few that I can see coming:

  • The Barack Obama Bubble
  • The New England Patriots Bubble (already leaking)
  • The “we haven’t had a terrorist attack in 6 ½ years” Bubble
  • The Houston Rockets Bubble (burst tonight)

What bubbles do you see?
